There are several routes across the channel, varying from the regular route of Dover Calais, to 50 minute crossings Portsmouth to Boulogne and overnight crossings to St Malo. You can also use the cross channel tunnel.
Depending upon where you sail to, there are many routes down to Chanteloube, some via Paris, others by-passing Paris altogether. The journey is possible in one day with an early start from the ferry ports. However late afternoon crossings are often cheaper and if this was your choice you could break up the journey with an overnight stop on the way. On the way down we often stop off near Tours, two hotels we can recommend are:
The Mercure Tours Nord
La Mere Hamard, Semblancay
On the way back we have stayed in Le Mans at the Kyriad Le Mans Est, all Hotels have been, clean comfortable and easy to get to from the motorway but our favourite is La Mere Hamard.
An alternative to driving down is to catch a ferry to Calais and from there take the overnight French motorail train down to Brive which is approximately an hours drive from the house. Savings made if booked on line. Click Here To Visit Rail Europe
